Description of the project

To address the issue of unhealthy children’s diet Nestlé in Ukraine launches Abetka Kharchuvannya program in Ukrainian schools in 2009. Primary school years are the right time to start fostering healthy eating habits. Schools are the best place for this type of education as it enriches children’s life and educates them introducing to healthy nutrition and active lifestyle.

Experts in nutrition, children psychologists and health care professionals developed Abetka Kharchuvannya program. This program was designed taking into consideration the traditions and needs of the Ukrainian society. It is based on the Nestlé’s profound research and broad experience in the area of balanced diet. Abetka Kharchuvannya program is split into 7 lessons for each grade of elementary school and is designed in a children friendly way. Educational materials include children’s book and teacher’s guide, which includes methodological recommendations on educating kids. This educational set is approved and recommended by Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

In addition to books and school lessons, the program is enriched by video lessons that are placed on website of Abetka Kharchuvannya program as well as YouTube channel. Also there is a special edition book of Abetka Kharchuvannya in order to engage employees and create positive impact on their kids and families.

This year Nestlé Ukraine organized Chef’s Day, where children cooked healthy lunch and find out which products are better for healthy growing up, participate in educational conference with workshops for teachers in Kyiv organized by National Pedagogical University in Kyiv in order to introduce the program to them, organize open lesson to promote program among teachers.

Moreover, this autumn Nestlé Ukraine created a zone in the biggest art center in Kyiv which includes interactive game, nutritional plate and information about nutrition, so visitors, both kids and adults will find out useful information for them in interactive art way. This zone was highly appreciated by Art zone director and traveled to other Ukrainian cities.

The program started its Ukrainian way back in 2009, today it covers 1300 schools, and 330,000 primary school students throughout Ukraine are trained in habits of good nutrition and active lifestyles.
