Description of the project

The “Energy-efficient schools: new generation” Project” was developed for the purpose of procuring conditions for rational and responsible consumption of energy resources. The educational program consists of 2 courses titled “Basics of energy supply and energy consumption”, which have received certification of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and several social commitment competitions.

The Project`s target audience: 6 to 11 grade students, teachers, parents, local self-government bodies. 

Schools undergo registration every school year in order to participate in the project and throughout 1 school year study 2 courses on energy efficiency of their choice, they take part in a number of competitions on energy saving and sustainable approach to natural resources. 

The Project`s components:

  • Innovative interactive program with distance learning, available on the website http://energyschool.org.ua/, online strategy game “Smart house”
  • The system of building energy management on a local level, including fundraising strategies
  • Learning system in the form of “Interregional classes” – students from various cities of Ukraine have the opportunity to create an “interregional class” and study (e.g. students from Lviv study in one classroom with students from Dobropillia of Donetsk region)
  • After the study is over 20 of the most successful students according to rating gain the opportunity to be prepared for entering a higher education establishment within the “Career 4.0” project, i.e. a series of master classes and trainings on developing the key components, and visit leading higher education establishments of the country.

Responsible consumption and production

For every 1,000 schools participating in the project, up to 5200 MW / year of energy resources can be saved, which will reduce CO2 emissions. Changing the behavioral guidance as a result of learning - from pupils to parents, from parents to friends, colleagues, neighbors - will save about 56.7 million cubic meters of natural gas (used to produce heat, hot water, cooking) and 25 900 MWh of electricity consumed in the residential sector. Such resource savings will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. By 133.5 thousand tons.We estimate that up to 5.200 MWh of energy may be saved for every 1.000 schools involved in the project, resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions. The change in behavioural guidance resulting from training - from pupils to parents, from parents to friends, colleagues, neighbours - will result in saving about 56.7 million cubic meters of natural gas (used for heat, hot water, cooking) and 25,900 MWh of electricity consumed in the residential sector. Quality education

The development of an online platform has significantly reduced inequalities in the access to modern teaching methods between urban and rural schools. If in 2015 the number of rural schools participating in the project was only 4%, now their share has increased to 36%. This demonstrates the potential of the project's curriculum for the implementation of the principle of equal education for all.
